March Newsletter

Message from the President

Winter OpsWell March is upon us, and hopefully Spring and all the good flying that it brings is right around the corner. The club has launched its new homepage, with a number of new features to keep members and perspective members informed about what is going on at the club. It has some interactive components to it as well, so that members can share photos from some of their flying adventures with the entire club. I will let Steve Haire explain all of the details about the new site as he was generous enough with his time and expertise to have created it for all of us.

If you have not already done so, take a look at the new site

March Club Meeting - Note Date Change!

Thursday March 27th

John Lovelace

Meeting date has been moved. This month we're fortunate to have John Lovelace as our guest speaker. Many of you know John from his very successful TV show, "Wings Over Canada". As of this post my understanding is that he is crossing the country talking about this year's Century Flight event. You may recall seeing Dr. Tom's enjoyable presentation, including stories and slides from his epic cross country on a recent Century Flight event.

In order to accommodate John's hectic appearance schedule we've moved the Thursday night meeting to March 27th thinking that many members would enjoy an evening with John as our guest speaker.

As of today I've not received all the details but it's sure to be a very interesting club meeting. As information becomes available we'll update the website so please stay tuned.

Oh and remember, our Thursday meetings are open to guests, please let me know by email so I can make sure we've got space available.

February's Meeting Wrap-up

For those who couldn't make it

Ewan Tasker TSBFebruary's meeting was well attended given that the weather on that Thursday night made driving touch and go. Our guest speaker was Ewan Tasker, Senior Regional Accident Investigator with the Transportation Safety Board.

Ewan's topic for the evening focused on several key points. In his 16 years with TSB he said he's never investigated an accident where the cause was able to be blamed solely on an aircraft malfunction. In every case the pilot's actions, or failure to exercise good judgment was a major contributing factor.

The second take-away, and equally as important, is that in many accidents where one or more of the aircraft's occupants could have survived they didn't as a result of not wearing their seat belts. Ewan went on to say that when float planes are involved the odds of succumbing to injuries in a water crash  are compounded by the lack of egress training taken by most float operators.

A special last minute addition to the evening was Phil Englishman, Southern Ontario Director from COPA. Philip came out to speak about the up-coming COPA elections. He pointed out just a few of the challenges faced by COPA and urged us all to review the list of directors and go online and vote.
